Platform & Gig Workers Welfare
Problem:
Platform and gig workers in Karnataka faced precarious employment conditions — lacking access to social security, welfare benefits, and formal recognition under labour laws.
Intervention
- Drafted the Karnataka Platform-Based Gig Workers (Social Security and Welfare) Bill, 2024 to institutionalize welfare and protection for gig and platform workers.
- Developed a prototype digital case management system for labour dispute tracking in collaboration with the International Labour Organization (ILO), Bangkok (Feb 2025).
- Conducted international and national consultations on extending social protection to informal and gig workers — including sessions in Turin, New Delhi, Kuala Lumpur, and Bengaluru.
- Drafted both the Act and Rules for Gig and Platform Workers, and the Domestic Workers Bill, aimed at extending social protection and labour welfare to the informal workforce in Karnataka.
Outcome:
- Karnataka became one of the first states to create a dedicated legal framework for gig and platform workers.
- Enhanced awareness among platform companies and aggregators on welfare contributions and compliance mechanisms.
What’s Next:
- Rollout of the Gig Workers Social Security Welfare Board and online contribution portal.
- Implementation of digital tools for dispute redressal and grievance monitoring.
